It was the third one, but it did not give me an option to install it anywhere other than over the existing one at C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\9.0. However, it also claims it installs over C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.0\data.

That sounds like you did install our recommended 9.0 64 bit PostgreSQL - if you did it manually you'll need to change the password to whatever you used during the PostgreSQL installation.

How do Install this at the root rather than where it is trying to install?

You can choose the folder used during the installation process - check out this guide.

The installer says "An existing PostgreSQL installation has been found at C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\9.0. This installation will be upgraded."

Then in the next window it says "An existing data directory has been found at C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.0\data set to use port 5432. This directory and its configuration will be used for this installation.

Should I unistall those installations? How so?

P.S. My computer has the following folders right now:

C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\8.3
C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\9.0
C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.0

Can a simple delete or uninstall take care of these.

If you uninstall all versions of PostgreSQL, then delete those folders you'll be starting pretty fresh. If you haven't imported anything successfully, there's no data to lose.

I have uninstalled/deleted everything. For the installation directory I have chosen C:\PostgreSQL. Then when I choose C:\PostgreSQL\data as the data directory, an error box opens with the text "pg_controldata - reads the data from pg_control has stopped working". When I close that box another one opens that says "The existing data directory (catalog version:) is not compatible with this server (catalog version: 201008051)."
