PT2 is running slow lately, upgrade to the newer postgres?

Postby black winter day » Fri Feb 20, 2009 5:09 am

Hi, i don't know if you are aware of this thread at 2+2

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/28/in ... er-362568/

From there i found out, that my postgres (i use 8.0) is too old and that is probably what is causing my computer to lag while importing hands (i play on Crypto).

I was advised to this link in order to upgrade

http://www.enterprisedb.com/docs/en/8.3 ... ading.html

But i don't really understand what it says there and it seems too complicated to perform. Is there a simpler way to do this? My software frequently freezes because of the old version.

Thanks!

That's not what you have to do, at least that's not what I would recommend.

1. download and install 8.3
http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/downloa ... .3.6-2.zip

2. then do as detailed here
archives/PT2/viewtopic.php?t=24880

3. add a new record on the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window to point to 8.3 - when you install 8.3 it will try to use port #5432 as default so you will have to change it to 5433 during the install (8.0 is running on port 5432).

4. Use the Utilities > PostgreSQL Database Functions window to backup the 8.2 database.

5. Use the Utilities > PostgreSQL Database Functions window to restore that backup into the 8.3 database.

6. Use the File > Maintain Database Names window, click the Add button and in the last field choose "Select existing PostgreSQL database" function to select the database from 8.3

Thanks for the reply, Pat. Will it go smooth even though i'll install 8.3 over 8.0?

You won't be installing 8.3 over 8.0. 8.0 is still going to reside on your computer and PT2 should still work until you get everything converted. Then once you are sure all it well you can decide if you want to uninstall 8.0 to free up some space.

Trying to install it, it says "account name" - "postgres"
"account domain" - home

And it gives me an error "Invalid user name specified: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

What should i do?

This is the name of the user that's going to start the PGSQL 8.3 service. It's also the user that starts the 8.0 service. If you don't remember the password you used when you installed 8.0, change the user name to "postgres_83" instead and then give it a new password.

On the next window, you'll also be asked for a username/password again, this is going to be a database user account. You can leave that one set to "postgres" but make sure you remember the password you enter there because you'll need that when you create the new record on the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window in PT when you setup the 8.3 link. On that window you'll use...

server = localhost
user = postgres
pwd = the password
port = 5433
ODBC Entry = PostgreSQL UNICODE
Encoding = UNICODE

I am stuck at step 5.
When trying to restore, it open a black window, which says
pg_restore: connecting to database for restore
password:

But when i try to type a password, nothing happens.The cursor doesnt move.

Also, when i backed up the database, it asked for some file, which i found at the postgres directory. It didn't do it before.
I had to also browse to select the pg_restore file.

You need to go to ... Start > Programs > PostgreSQL 8.3 > Configuration Files > Edit pg_hba.conf

Go to the bottom of the file, there are 2 places where it will say "md5". Change these to say "trust" then save the file and do the restore again.

With 8.3, sometimes you have to tell PT where to find the pg_restore and pg_backup files, they should be in the c:\program files\postgresql\8.3\bin folder.

I did all that and was able to successfully install postgres8.3.
The things is, there is a weird bug now, that it almost immediately starts to take huge amounts of memory. Screenshot attached. Because of that, my whole pc works slower.
What should i do?
